Where have the most crashes happened, and where do the most fatalities occur?

• From looking at the map above, we can see that crashes happen everywhere, and that they've gotten more common over time. Don't let that be a cause for alarm, though: as air travel increases and there are more planes in the sky, it's not surprising that there would also be more crashes.
• As expected, the number of fatalities in crashes was initially fairly low; crashes with high numbers of fatalities didn't start occurring until aircraft capacity increased in the 1950s and 1960s.
• Perhaps most relevant to modern-day travel, looking at only the past decade of crashes we see that although the number of crashes is fairly evenly distributed among the continents, the highest concentrations of fatalities generally occur around the Mediterranean and in Southeast Asia.

When do most crashes happen?

• The first chart shows crashes by month of a year, from this chart we see that December usually has higher crashes than other month.
• The second charts shows crashes by days of a week. This chart shows there is no big difference in amount of crashes across each day of a week.
• The third chart shows crashes by hours of a day. There are more crashes between 7 am to 8 pm.

What are the most common causes of accidents?

• The top 5 categories that contain most of the crash causes are: weather, general failure, equipment malfunction, collision, and pilot negligence.
• Upon further inspection of the yearly distributions of the crash causes over the years, a decline in cause frequency is noticeable. Such decline could be explained by progress in technology & other advancements which have made flights safer.

You shouldn’t worry too much about a possible crash, as technology has developed and improved over time. We are safer now than earlier in the history of air travel!
However if you really must, then you better check that there are no clouds in the sky upon your departure. ;)
